Economics of Computer Network Overheads

A 1 GB file downloaded from the Internet will have around ~ 53 MB of additional (invisible) data
This data is not part of the actual file, nor we can see it anywhere once the download is completed.
Simply put, this additional data is called communication overhead, an essential component which contains all control information required for the file to travel the vast computer networks.

So what's the concern? Especially given the fast Internet connections and unlimited data plans we have?

Well, what if the download file size is 10 GB? Now the new overhead unavoidably increases to not less than ~534 MB.

Telnet Protocol Analysis

Telnet is a well know protocol known to every IT Administrator. Besides being a clear-text protocol where it sends all of its communications in plain text, Telnet is interesting in the way it communicates.

Every character we type on the terminal is sent in a single IP Packet, right, a single packet is used for every character.

A quick look at Wireshark capture shows the below.
  • The capture is for a Telnet login from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.1
  • fake/user (userid/password)

Internet of Things, DDoS attacks and Blackout in Murica!

On Oct 21st Internet has experienced a huge outage like never before, when it happened I was browsing Internet as usual and was totally unaware of the million cries overseas, most of the people in US suffered Internet blackout and fortunately some went outside of their caves and socialized with other human beings, except the SJWs who got PTSD over the whole matter. Good or bad? I don’t know, nor I cared because my Internet was working just fine. The point is, majority of the sites were not accessible/extremely slow in eastern part of the US for hours! That was a big deal, Libya has the worst Internet Speed in the entire galaxy besides their ongoing crisis, that didn’t stop ahmed from downloading Mia Khalifa’s pictures, does it matter? No, because nobody gives a fuck about Ahmed or his country, fortunately India is at

Himalayan Ride 2016 – Complete Itinerary

My first successfully completed very long ride, and it was to Himalayas! I was very sceptic about its completion right from the begining but fortunately everything went cool and I am back in one piece! Considering that 90 % of the ride was done in solo :)

Planned the trip in 5 stages, of which I cancelled stage 4 due to many reasons. The main stages, Stage 2 and 3 were completed, I am happy with that. I am listing the entire route details, I am not going to explain about the places/experiences and you won’t see the photos either, I’ll be covering them in different posts. This is just about the route(s) I’ve took.

AR and VR, who is winning?

While everyone is enjoying Pokemon Go I am enjoying how Augmented Reality is taking over Virtual Reality, though VR is highly potential it has the drawback of limitation to physical world.

A VR represents it's own virtual world (confined space) rather than the real world surrounding us. Where as in an AR, it actual creates a creative augmented world (virtual layer) on top of our real world, there by increasing our mobility and interactions from the confined worlds of VR.

Is marriage a Social Obligation?

I am 28 and single, I enjoy my life by travelling solo, doing photography, reading books and last but not least, my job.

Why are you still single? Aren’t you planning for kids? House? Your biological clock is ticking!

These are the kind of shit I am hearing these days, I really don’t understand why people think marriage is so relevant for a “happy life”. For me, it’s just an option out of million other trivial options I have. I really don’t feel it should be a compulsion.

Foggy and Energetic ride from Tirupati to Bengaluru

I started to Tirupati on Jan 8th morning around 7:45 a.m, ride was good, and that route is routine for me. Road was not good after Chittoor due to the recent rains but they fixed it this time, for the most part. Reached home around 12:45 p.m with a long break in between just to relax.

Usual stuff at home and I rode to Nellor on 9th Jan ~140 km from Tirupati, it was a single road till Naidupeta and then it's the NH 5 till Nellor, beautiful tarmac. Reason was to meet a friend and after that I came back to Tirupati on the same day evening. The road passes next to several farm fields

2016 NYE ride # Day 3 & 4

Continuation from Day 1 & 2

Day 3:

Got up at 7:00 a.m, freshened up and started to Beypore Port. This port has rich history, It has the reputation of building some of the finest boats in ancient times, worth reading its history. Besides its amazing historical background, the area is extremely dirty now, don't even think about going to its beach, it looks like a dump yard! Only place I liked and spent most of the time was near its stone pier, it goes almost 1 km into the ocean, a rewarding walk where you'll be presented with several birds, fishing ships, navy vessels and occasionally playful bottlenose dolphins. I had the pleasure of watching them all.

2016 NYE ride # Day 1 & 2

I wanted to escape 2016 NYE out to somewhere where I can be just myself. So I planned this ride for 4 days, the ride was planned, but not the places. Till the day before the ride I wasn't fixed on what places to go, roughly made a list and settled on 3 - Mysuru, Kozhikode and Mangaluru. On 30th Dec I started to Mysuru.

Ride to B R Hills & K Gudi Wilderness Camp

I was at my friend's room partying on 18th night, had to leave at 12 as I am going on a ride with another friend Arun and two others.

Went to my place and I couldn't get any sleep, sometimes I get this excitement before a bike ride, so that's when I wrote the article on Free Basics. After completing it and finishing a debate with another guy over it I looked at the time and it was 3 a.m, even a short nap was pointless as we planned to start at 4 a.m, so I geared up and we met at a place which we decided earlier and started our ride.

Why Facebook's "Free Basics" is Evil (another fancy name to its Internet.org)

Preface:
There are dozens of beautiful articles/videos which explains the importance of Net Neutrality, yet, people miserably fail to understand its vital importance in this information age.
This is another post to explain it in my own words, hopefully at least 1 out of 10 people who reads this can understand its importance and act accordingly.
Note: This is solely intended to users who still fail to understand the utmost importance of Net Neutrality and fall for the fancy campaigns like

How can I destroy The Internet?

That was a question asked by a guy in Quora, I get frequent questions like that, but at times I fail to control the urge to not answer them. So below was my reply.

Actual Question:

The Internet: How can I destroy internet? Though I know most people would laugh it away but this thing came into my mind as I was learning about worms.

The Martian movie blunder

I really enjoyed The Martian movie, every minute of it! But it's hard to keep the rational side of me to aside, so here is some rant.

One of the biggest blunder in the movie.

Matt getting knocked off by the sand storm in the movie beginning scene.

Mars atmosphere, well, there's actually no atmosphere in Mars from Earth's perspective, the air is so thin, 100 times less denser than Earth's

One of those profound experiences

So I rode to Yercaud, after visiting the watch tower at Karadiyur View Point I was heading back to my room, all of a sudden thick clouds loomed the entire mountain with thunders in no time, and it started to rain! Actually, I got freaked out, because I am alone, riding in a remote area with no proper connectivity, I was getting mobile signal back in the watch tower but not here.

I rode fast and stopped near a temple and went inside as it started to rain very heavily. It was almost completely dark (still 6:30 p.m)

First Anniversary! :D

July 4th 2014, the day I bought my first bike, Enfield Thunderbird 500. Today after covering some 15,000 odd kilometers I look back at my reasons behind making one of the best choices of my life.
1st: I fell in love with the Enfield Thunderbird’s new design.
2nd: I desperately needed a two wheeler for my daily commute and other traveling needs.

Ride to Kodaikanal, my first long ride

Long ride was a pending item in my list, I wanted to see how myself and my bike can perform in such rides and to see if we both are capable for my upcoming long list of tours, I chose Kodaikanal for this ride. Kodai was always in my interest, so planned for it and started on 23rd morning around 7:00 a.m.

I took NH 7 via Hosur, it took me more than an hour just to come out of Bengaluru's traffic, 7:00 a.m is when the traffic slowly starts congesting almost every part of the city, and it was even more when I reached Silk Board junction. Anyways, managed to come out of it. Had breakfast

Clicked 9000 Kilometers on my Thunderbird 500!

It's been 8 months and yesterday I gave my beloved bike Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500 to its final free servicing, out of my curiosity I asked the servicing center guys to show me how to change the engine oil, break pads, clutch cable and couple of other important routines that are done for a healthy bike life.
HSR Services in Bangalore are good enough (not great) when it comes to Enfield servicing and shows professionalism at job,

My first ride!

It’s been like 3 months with my Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500, so far I used it only for daily commute, always felt like going on a long ride and the time has come. Like any other newbie bike rider in Bengaluru I've chose Nandi Hills as my destination.

Nandi Hills is located at around 65 km from Bengaluru, know for its breathtaking sunrise view. Located at an altitude of 1,479 m above sea level, it’s considered to be one of the highest peak in south India.

Clear guide on bringing Kitkat 4.4 and Nexus 5 UI to Nexus 4

Hi Peeps! I know most of the Nexus 4 owners in India are still waiting for Kitkat 4.4 OTA, I being one of them couldn't wait and finally updated kitkat 4.4 manually.

After the update I noticed the launcher is the same as before, Nexus 5 UI isn't available for Nexus 4 OTA update, which means, we won't be getting GEL (Google Experience Launcher) which integrates Google Search (noticeably, the Ok Google feature), Google Now and few UI enhancements. GEL is exclusive for Nexus 5 only (at least for now).

Got my Nexus 4

So, finally after a long wait of 2 months, it got my Nexus 4! ;-)
There was some hiccups dealing with Cart2India dealer on eBay, again, we know that it’s happening with most of the people who ordered this beast, Google too admitted that they underestimated the demand for this product.
Anyways, glory! I finally got it.
